Red Bill Toucans (Ramphastos tucanus) are comparable in size to the Swainson Toucan and just a bit smaller than a Toco. They are found from Colombia east through Venezuela to Guyana and Surinam and south into very northern Brazil. Their call is a yelping sounds and thus they are considered "yelpers" along with Swainsons as opposed to the "croakers." Red Bills were first bred in captivity by Jerry Jennings in 1983 and have only been bred sporadically since. They were imported into the USA in good numbers from the late 1970s until 1991 and have not been imported since due to the Wild Bird Conservation Act's ban on importation of CITES listed toucans as they are listed on CITES Appendix II. They are rare in U.S. aviculture today. Courtesy of Emerald Forest
