Crimson Rump Toucanet (Aulachorynchus haematopygus) is one of 7 species of mountain toucanets and a close relative of the Emerald Toucanet. The Crimson Rump's bright red rump sets it apart. Crimson Rumps are found in the mountains of Ecuador and northern Peru, where they are commonly seen. Crimson Rumps were imported in the late 1970s but completely disappeared from U.S. aviculture in the early 1990s until a few were again imported in 2003 by Emerald Forest Bird Gardens where they have bred readily ever since. As with all Ramphastids, they lay elliptical white eggs, 3-4 to a clutch. Incubation lasts 16 days and they fledge at 43 days of age. They make good pets and are inexpensive. The first breeding of Crimson Rumps occurred at the Los Angeles Zoo in 1966. They are not listed on CITES.
